We picked the Titanic as the topic for our National History day project because we wanted to learn what caused the boat to sink. We all knew it hit an iceberg, but why it wasn’t able to with stand the extreme collision, we wondered. Also, we wanted to find out why it affected society and the boats and cruise lines we use today. The fact such an event is still remembered to this day, an event that happened nearly 100 years ago, must mean it had some large impact on society, and through this project, we got to learn all about what that impact was, who it effected, and what it changed in boat safety.
Going to the public library is not only a great place to study and get work done, but also very useful place to find primary sources, and first hand accounts of the topic one is researching. Our group made visits here while looking for a good atmosphere to gather research, and learn more about our National History Day topic on how the RMS Titanic’s sinking effected cruise liner safety across the globe. The internet can always be a good source for accurate information, if one knows how to search properly. Their are many fabrications, falsities, biases, and above all else, a large use of plagiarism over the web. We conducted research so that we could avoid these as much as possible.
Each of us have been interested in web site creating, and we saw this project as a great way to get a feel for what that is like. It is such a unique thing, to be able to develop a website purely on your own, and make it look how ever you want. We wanted our web site lay out to look clean, refined, defined, and simple. We wanted to get the message across in a simple manner, that way the reader could easily understand our thesis and the supporting details provided.
Revolution, reaction, and reform, three words that can stand for so much, but also are all related to the idea of change in society. Be it change brought on by the people, by government, or by an influential event, such as the sinking of the RMS Titanic. At first, it’s difficult to see what impact the cruise liner’s tragic end has to do with revolution, reaction, or reform, but as we have proven in our website, the safety precautions taken on cruise liners today would be nothing similar to how they would’ve been if the Titanic had never sunk. It was interesting to look into all the investigations around the Titanic’s sinking, and see how the people’s reaction to so many innocent lives being lost due to poor safety procedures and poor materials used, caused such a revolution in cruise liner safety, that we still see today.
